Technically slavery wasn’t completely abolished in the United States. Section 1 of the 13th amendment states, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”
There is a specific exemption for punishment for crime — which explains a whole lot about our prison system….
